"That's where the soft spots are."The loss Sunday sent the Broncos (6-7) below .500 again, imperiled their playoff hopes and may ultimately jeopardize both Joseph's and Keenum's job security beyond this season.Signed to a two-year, $36 million deal this spring, Keenum hasn't been the same quarterback who guided the Vikings to the NFC championship game in January but the journeyman he was before that special season.He threw three interceptions in his Denver debut and was picked off once in each of his next seven games before stringing together five games without an interception.He has just five touchdown throws in that span, however, and he's averaged a paltry 206 yards passing, which amounts to a good half for many quarterbacks in today's high-scoring NFL."Case wants to be safe with the ball," Joseph said. "And obviously he's seeing different looks. But in my opinion, being safe with the ball, it allows you to have great numbers in that category. But as far as making plays on the field, you can't be safe doing that. We didn't hit them. We missed three or four chances to make some big plays in the pass game," Joseph said, noting that the 49ers loaded the box to stop the run and played with a single high safety. "So, you have to make plays in the pass game versus those kinds of defenses to kind of soften them up a little bit. And we didn't make those plays."One factor in Keenum's paltry numbers is a patchwork O-line that consists of a guard at center and four tackles. Although they're solid in run blocking, they're often lacking in pass protection. Keenum has been sacked a career-high 30 times so far.Still, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave has stuck with heavy doses of three-receiver sets in spread formations, which often results in a quickly collapsing pocket 鈥?it's the same thing Mike McCoy did last year before getting fired at midseason and replaced by Musgrave.The Broncos also have had trouble with their scripted plays, the ones they're most comfortable with during the week. In their last six games, they've managed just two field goals and no touchdowns in the first quarter.And ever since Sanders threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton at Arizona on Oct. 18, the Broncos' opening drives in those six games have all ended in punts, including five three-and-outs."It's all of us," Joseph said. "We've got to obviously coach better early and play better early. In the last month we've had chances to keep plays alive and we haven't. Missing throws. Drops on third down. Play calling. "He said if you didn't have enough to play for, play for that man. I think he's proud right now."Bowles and the Jets have not detailed the nature of the 49-year-old Rodgers' illness. It also is unclear when he might be able to return to the team.In the meantime, Bowles called the defensive plays in New York's 34-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday."Obviously, to have that guy missing, there's a big hole on the defensive side of the football," Bowles said. "He's in the room every day working with those guys. I'm sure they played a lot for them, and they played for him as well."The defense — which also met as a unit Friday to be sure all the players were on the same page — was solid for most of the game, keeping Case Keenum and the Broncos' offense off balance. His 14.6 yards per carry also set an NFL record for a player with at least 15 attempts, according to Elias Sports Bureau."It means a lot to me," Crowell said. "I've got to give all the credit to my O-line. I can't really take the credit. Really, it was all them. I mean, the holes were open. Anybody could've run through them. It just happened to be me. They really set the record."He simply dropped the ball in the end zone, a much tamer celebration than the one in Cleveland two weeks ago when he wiped his rear end with the football and fired it into the stands. Crowell was fined $13,369 by the NFL for the gesture and got a stern lecture from Bowles — and the running back promised it would never happen again.LEAKY DEFENSEThe Broncos were frustrated with themselves after the game, particularly with allowing so many big plays.In addition to Crowell's long run, Robby Anderson also caught a 76-yard TD pass from Sam Darnold. It was the first time the Jets have had multiple TDs on offense of 75 yards or more in the same game since Sept. 24, 1972, against the Baltimore Colts. "I just have to get in shape and I have to finish."ON THE CASEKeenum finished with two touchdown passes — to Sutton and Demaryius Thomas — his first two since the Broncos' season-opening win against Seattle.He was 35 of 51 for 377 yards, setting single-game career highs in completions, yards passing and passing first downs (19). Sutton caught the first touchdown pass of his career, and DaeSean Hamilton had his first three NFL receptions. But, the Broncos couldn't get much going consistently."We have to do better on first and second down, and not put our defense in bad situations," Keenum said. "It's a tough day."DARNOLD'S DAYDarnold finished 10 of 22 for 198 yards with an interception and three touchdowns — two to Anderson and one to Terrelle Pryor — as the Jets' offense had one of its most balanced and productive days ever."It's amazing to see the way our runners ran," Darnold said.
